African American Legislators

African American Legislators emerged as a powerful political force during the Reconstruction era (1865–1877) following the Civil War, when the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments opened the doors for Black men to vote and hold office across the South for the first time in U.S. history. More than 1,500 African Americans served in state legislatures and Congress during this period—most famously the 16 Black members elected to the U.S. House and two to the Senate—championing civil rights, public education, and economic opportunity despite fierce opposition, violence, and the eventual rollback of Reconstruction gains.
